Fatty Liver Warning Signs
Fatty liver means excess fat has accumulated in the liver. It is often associated with overweight or obesity, insulin resistance, diabetes and abnormal blood lipids, but it can occur in people who do not fit that pattern. Many people have no symptoms, so it is often discovered during tests performed for another reason.

Possible warning signs
Early fatty liver may be silent. Some people experience tiredness or vague discomfort in the upper right abdomen, but symptoms are not reliable for diagnosis. Blood tests and imaging may suggest fatty liver, while additional assessment may be needed to determine whether there is liver inflammation or scarring.

What increases risk?
Diabetes, excess abdominal weight, high triglycerides and metabolic syndrome are important risk factors. Alcohol can also contribute to fatty liver, and the amount and pattern of alcohol use should be discussed honestly with a clinician.

Management
For metabolic fatty liver, gradual weight reduction when appropriate, regular physical activity and control of blood sugar, cholesterol and blood pressure are central. Avoid crash diets. A doctor can advise whether medication or specialist evaluation is needed.

Protect the liver
Avoid unnecessary medicines or supplements marketed as 'liver cleansers'. Vaccination and screening for relevant viral hepatitis may be appropriate depending on individual risk.

When to seek medical help?
Yellowing of the eyes or skin, vomiting blood, black stools, severe abdominal swelling, confusion, severe abdominal pain or sudden deterioration needs urgent medical assessment.
